FFION Lewis has rejoined the Wales Women’s training squad ahead of their Six Nations Tournament in April - making it four former pupils of Ysgol Dyffryn Aman in the national rugby squad.

The 24 year-old scrum-half, who signed for Exeter Chiefs last September, has been capped 13 times for the Wales Women’s team, and has also represented her country in rugby sevens.

Lewis joins fellow ex-Amman Valley pupils Hannah Jones, Caitlin Lewis and Jess Roberts in being selected by head coach Warren Abrahams, with a month to go until the start of the tournament.

Wales travel to France on the weekend of April 3, host Ireland the following weekend and contest a third, ‘play-off’ match on the weekend of April 24 in a format similar to the Autumn Nations Cup.

“We all feel incredibly lucky to be working towards some competitive, Six Nations matches,” said former USA women’s sevens coach Abrahams, who was appointed to the Wales role in November.

“It’s fantastic to watch the contribution our players are making to their Allianz Premier 15s clubs, they are benefitting from top quality coaching and game-time, and we are grateful for that.”

Abrahams, who has confirmed that Siwan Lillicrap will be Wales' captain for the Six Nations, has extended his training squad, with a view to developing depth in readiness for the Rugby World Cup in September.

Along with the return from injury of internationals Ffion Lewis, Lleucu George and Kerin Lake, he has added five uncapped players in 17 year-old Gloucester-Hartpury forward Sisilia Tuipulotu, props Laura Bleehen, Gwenllian Jenkins and Madi Johns, and Exeter scrum-half Megan Davies.

He has also welcomed back Mel Howley (née Clay) after a year out, following the birth of her son, along with international forwards Carys Phillips and Bethan Dainton, thanks to their good form for Worcester Warriors and Harlequins respectively.

Abrahams added: “It’s vital we continue to develop the squad, with the Rugby World Cup just around the corner, and we are pleased with the attitude that the players have shown throughout this period - we are very excited for the next phase.

“We are encouraged by the physical progress and performance improvements the players are making, both within our environment and for their clubs, and they are also taking ownership of aspects of the analysis work on our opposition.”
