In conjunction with Cwmtawe community school, Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera and Maesydderwen, held their annual school debating competition and quiz night on January 26 at Cwmtawe school.
The subjects debated were - The right to live and die as we chose (Cwmtawe). The death penalty should be reinstated (Maesydderwen) and Asbos are inapropriate and should be thrown into the dustbin (Ystalyfera).
The winning categories were: Best debating team: Ystalyfera; Best chairperson: Owain Handley, Ystalyfera; Best proposer: Caradoc Jones, Ystalyfera; Best opposer: Lauren Donnelly, Maesydderwen. The quiz winners were Cwmtawe; Joint winners: Ruari Constant, Cwmtawe and Pepe, Ystalyfera. The Rotary club of Swansea Valley would like to thank all those who took part and Cwmtawe school for the use of the hall and providing refreshments.
Adjudicators were Marjory Taylor (chair), David Jones, Huw Evans. Timekeepers: Dan Griffiths and Bill Wicks. Quiz Master: Geoffrey Lewis. Scorers: Jamie Sweeney and David Coombs. Compere: David Marks. The vote of thanks was given by Geoffrey Lewis, president of Swansea Valley Rotary club.
