A multi-million dollar scandal which rocked McDonald's and their Monopoly game for more than a decade in the United States has been highlighted in a new TV documentary.

This is what you need to know.

What is the show about?

The six-part series, named McMillions, was executive produced by actor Mark Wahlberg, and has been dubbed by critics as 'the new Tiger King'.

The show chronicles the stranger-than-fiction story of an ex-cop turned security auditor called ‘Uncle Jerry’ who rigged the McDonald’s Monopoly game promotion for a decade, stealing millions of dollars and building a vast network of coconspirators across the US.

South Wales Guardian:

The documentary features exclusive first-hand accounts and archival footage from the FBI agents who brought down the gaming scam, McDonald’s corporate executives and the culprits and prize-winners who profited from the complicated scheme.

How did the scandal come to light?

The scandal first came to light following an anonymous tip-off to the FBI in 2001.

Prior to the tip off, McDonald's awarded prizes in its Monopoly promotional game tie-in for more than a decade across the US.

Until the FBI contacted them, bosses at the fast-food company were unaware that the biggest winning tickets were being stolen and sold on to a number of undeserving winners. A lengthy FBI investigation unearthed a network of winners who were family and friends and became co-conspirators.

How can I watch it?

The show is available to watch on Sky Documentaries, available on Virgin and Sky.

It can also be viewed through on-demand streaming service Now TV.
