As Spring breathes new life into our homes, the viral #IndoorJungle trend on TikTok is inspiring thousands to transform their spaces into vibrant, leafy retreats.

For our pets, we should add.

But as our homes become greener, it’s crucial to ensure our choices are just as safe as they are stylish, especially for our furry family members.

London-based eco-cleanup experts Rainbow Rubbish Removals have teamed up with pet specialist Josh Wiesenfeld, CEO of Boxiecat and Boxiedog, to help you build the ultimate indoor jungle for your pets.

7 Pet-Safe Tips for Building an Indoor Jungle:

1. Choose Pet-Safe Plants First

Some of the most popular indoor plants can be dangerous to animals, even in small amounts.

Wiesenfeld advises avoiding toxic plants like lilies, aloe vera, pothos (Devil’s Ivy), and sago palms, which can cause anything from vomiting to kidney failure. Instead, build your jungle with pet-safe picks like:

  • Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum) – stylish, air-purifying, and safe for pets
  • Boston Fern – lush and non-toxic
  • Bamboo Palm – brings tropical vibes without risk
  • Calathea & Prayer Plant – bold patterns and safe foliage
  • Parlour Palm – elegant and totally animal-friendly
  • Cat Grass – supports feline digestion and adds greenery

Tip: Always double-check a plant’s toxicity on trusted sources like the ASPCA before buying.

2. Maximise Vertical Space—Out of Paw’s Reach

Use wall-mounted pots, shelves, and hanging baskets to keep plants away from curious paws and playful nibblers. High displays not only protect your pets but also add depth and height to your jungle design.

Try: Cascading pet-safe plants like Spider Plant in a hanging planter for added drama.

3. Mix & Match (Safe) Textures

Variety brings life to any indoor garden. Blend large-leaf plants with feathery ferns and upright palms—but always ensure they’re safe for animals. Grouping textures and colours creates a visually rich jungle that’s also low-risk for pets.

Safe combination: Boston Fern + Calathea + Parlour Palm

4. Repurpose with Purpose

Spring clean with sustainability in mind: reuse jars, tins, or vintage ceramics as plant pots. It’s an eco-friendly way to add personality—without adding danger.

Just be sure that any container is stable enough to withstand curious pets.

Tip: Old mugs make perfect homes for pet-safe succulents like Haworthia.

5. Clean Air, Safe Air

Many pet-safe plants also help filter indoor air. Spider plants, bamboo palms, and prayer plants are great natural purifiers that help remove toxins while keeping your home healthier for pets and humans alike.

Best placed in: Bedrooms, home offices, or anywhere your pet loves to nap.

6. Keep Your Care Routine Green

Instead of chemical-laden fertilisers, use coffee grounds or compost from trimmed leaves. This keeps your plants and pets healthier—chemical residues in soil or runoff water can be risky if ingested.

Tip: If you compost indoors, keep bins pet secure with a sealed lid.

7. Save Water, Sustain Safely

Cut down on water waste by collecting rainwater or repurposing cooled cooking water for plant care. Consider drought-tolerant, low-maintenance plants like certain safe succulents or parlour palms that thrive with less water and less worry.

Tip: Use self-watering pots to reduce spills (and temptation for thirsty pets).

Josh Wiesenfeld comments: “Even a nibble of the wrong plant can lead to serious consequences for pets.

"Creating a pet-safe indoor jungle means choosing greenery that complements your style—and protects your animals. When in doubt, lift plants out of reach, monitor your pets’ behavior, and always do a quick toxicity check.”
