AM Rhodri Glyn Thomas has accused Carmarthenshire county council and Dwr Cymru of "continuously passing the buck" after learning that it took SIX weeks to repair a burst water pipe in Carregamman Isaf, Ammanford.

Mr Thomas said he decided to weigh into the dispute as each organisation was passing responsibility for the repair to the other.

He maintained Dwr Cymru visited the site on no less than three occasions to assess the burst pipe and subsequently issued two Leak Notices on the local authority to fix the problem.

Frustrated at the lack of action by the local authority, residents called on Mr Thomas to intervene.

He has now been told that the leak will be repaired today (Wednesday) with the county council footing the bill.

"It is not fair for organisations to continuously pass the buck while water is gushing out of a burst pipe for over six weeks," he said.

" Having made a series of telephone calls to the local authority myself, I too was informed the council had no responsibility for the leak.

"Now I have learnt the council has been issued with two Leak Notices from Dwr Cymru instructing them to sort out the problem. Following the lack of action from the council, Dwr Cymru will be fixing the problem on Wednesday and sending the bill to the county council.

"It would be interesting to know whether the council could have carried out the work itself at a cheaper rate than Dwr Cymru and potentially have saved the tax-payer some money.

"It is disappointing the local authority didn't carry out its responsibilities sooner as it would have saved residents a great deal of anxiety."

A county spokesman confirmed they received a Leak Notice from Dwr Cymru on Friday, June 3.

"To avoid any further delays we have agreed that Dwr Cymru will undertake remedial works on our behalf on Wednesday, June 8," she added. "We hope this will bring the matter to a conclusion."
