A COUNTY councillor has admitted he is "absolutely baffled" by Royal Mail's decision to close Llandovery Delivery Office.

Cllr Ivor Jackson was giving his reaction after it was confirmed the office in High Street would close on March 7 and all mail for Llandovery would be handled from Llandeilo.

"It's a crying shame we're losing a facility which has been in Llandovery for so many years," he told the Guardian.

"The service just won't be the same and if anyone can explain to me precisely what savings will be made I'd really like to hear from them.

"This decision just beggars belief because we have nine postmen down here in Llandovery who will now be making a 24-mile round trip to Llandeilo."

Town councillors felt Royal Mail's assertion that parcels and packages could be collected from Llandovery post office was presumptious.

Sub-postmaster Robin Ennion said he was still in discussion over future arrangements and nothing had been decided yet.

A Royal Mail spokesman said the office had been closed as part of "an ambitious modernisation programme" aimed at creating "a 21st century postal service."
