PUB giant JD Wetherspoon this week confirmed it is looking into the possibility of moving into Ammanford.

Following widespread rumours in recent weeks, a spokesman told the Guardian that a site close to the town centre had been earmarked for a Wetherspoon pub.

“We are happy to confirm that we are looking closely at the town and there is one specific site we are particularly interested in,” he said.

“I don’t want to say anything further at this stage in case it could affect negotiations.”

However, a source has told the Guardian that JD Wetherspoon was “on the brink” of clinching a deal for the Cottage Inn on Wind Street, which has been on sale since last year.

Local county-councillor Hugh Evans said any new development in town had to be welcomed.

“The more businesses we get moving into Ammanford the better,” he added.

The award-winning national chain of pubs sells cask-conditioned ales, continental lagers and wines and spirits plus food, including curry-themed nights.

Meanwhile, low-cost supermarket chain Lidl has confirmed its new store next to Ammanford police station will open on May 20 with the creation of 30 new jobs.
