A CELEBRATION of one of Wales' greatest theatrical figures is being staged at Theatr Elli for three nights from tomorrow. The Phoenix Theatre Group is marking the centenary of Emlyn Williams, the critically acclaimed writer and actor, by staging one of his most famous works, "The Corn is Green." It was this play that really showcased Williams' talents both as an actor and a director in the West End. He played the part of Morgan Evans (played by Dale Francis is the Phoenix version), a pit boy who overcomes enormous obstacles to earn himself a place on a scholarship to Oxford. In the remarkable story that is "The Corn is Green", Evans achieves his unheard-of-breakthrough to the pinnacle of academia through the sheer bloodymindedness of the remarkable Miss Moffat. The role of Miss Moffat, played by Rhiannon Taylor, is such a juicy role that Hollywood greats such as Bette Davies and Katherine Hepburn have played her in film adaptations. The leading pair will be supported by a seasoned cast of Phoenix Theatre regulars who are confident of interpreting a seminal work which brought Wales to the London stage in a resounding manner. Curtain-up is at 7.30pm and tickets at £5 can be booked in advance from Theatr Elli on 0845 226 3508.
