THE power of the press has prompted Carmarthenshire Council into repairing an Ammanford skate park.

Last month, the Guardian highlighted the plight of local in-line skaters and skateboarders who were complaining that improvements to the town's skate park had not materialised.

As a result of the article, regeneration and leisure board member for Carmarthenshire Council Clive Scourfield met a group of local youths to discuss their concerns.

He said: "Myself and Gerwyn Thomas, senior urban parks officer, have visited the skate park in Ammanford to see for ourselves the problems."

Mr Thomas said the skate park is worn because of wear and tear.

"It is a well used facility.

"This issue had been picked up by the county council and the park earmarked for maintenance.

"The work will be carried out this week and repair work should be completed in one day."

Mr Scourfield said the council is committed to providing high quality leisure facilities throughout Carmarthenshire.

"We are aware of the requirements of the youth in the county.

"Not only do the parks provide them with something to do, they also encourage the youth of today to stay fit.

"I am really glad to have been involved in this project and I am glad that the work will be carried out so swiftly."
