AMMANFORD’S popular Giant Fairtrade Banana Split returned for the first time since covid and was a huge success.

Unlike previous years, this year’s event involved individual portions of banana split to help ensure safety of attendees with the covid pandemic still in the back of people’s minds.

The event was held in the town’s Victorian Arcade and was put on by Ammanford Fair Trade Town Group with support from Ammanford Church, Capel Gellimanwydd, the Co-Op and Ammanford Town Council.

On Friday, May 12, the event was the first since 2020, and it was a real community event, with locals coming out to celebrate Ammanford’s status as a Fairtrade Town – which they were the first to be given the title in Wales 20 years ago.

The bananas and ice cream were donated by the local Co-Op stores and volunteers served the treat.

There were stalls – with the gazebos being provided by the town council – for local community groups such as Ammanford Food Bank, Brynaman Lido and Rhynew and plenty of Fairtrade Banana costumes and inflatable Fairtrade bananas to add to the fun.

Children chalked Fairtrade messages and pictures on the Plaza and put together a giant jigsaw of the Fairtrade logo.
