A man ‘secreted’ drugs in a police van outside Ammanford Police Station, Swansea Crown Court heard today.

Miss Jones, prosecuting for the Crown, told the jury in the opening of a trial on possession with intent to supply class A drugs that the defendant – Daniel Liam Meyler – secreted the drugs while waiting in the police van to be processed at the station.

In her opening statement, she said the defendant had been driving a silver Renault Laguna and had made a number of trips between Cardigan and Newport in Gwent, which were captured by automatic number plate recognition (ANPR).

Meyler, 42, of Williams Terrace, Cardigan, was pulled over by police on October 16, 2021, on the A48 in Cross Hands. Miss Jones said that he had been pulled over as it was suspected that the occupants of the vehicle – which included the defendant and another man – were concealing drugs inside their bodies.

Meyler was taken to Glangwili Hospital but he was refused treatment and so was transported to Ammanford Police Station. Miss Jones said that the station was busy that day and so Meyler was waiting in the van in the yard and during this time, he secreted a package which when opened, contained five smaller packages of diamorphine – an opioid drug related to heroin.

Miss Jones said that when the package had been secreted, the defendant said ‘words to the effect of ‘there it is.’’

She also told the court that his phone was seized and a number of messages were found that suggested he was selling the drugs.

Meyler denies a charge of possession of a class A drug with intent to supply, but has admitted a charge of possession of a class A drug.

The trial continues.
