Residents are being warned about a person making fraudulent phone calls claiming to be a police officer from Paddington Police Station.

The caller alleges that the person receiving the call is the victim of a fraudulent purchase of a television, but South Wales Police have confirmed that this is a scam.

“These scammers have the ability to ‘spoof’ phone numbers,” commented a South Wales Police spokesperson.

“They claim to belong to organisations such as banks or police authorities and request that the person on the other end of the phone calls 999 immediately.

“But we’re asking people not to do this.

“We’re also asking people to alert their neighbours and relatives about this scam to help reduce the number of incidents."

People are being urged to end the call and dial 101, preferably from a different phone, which ensures that the scammer is not still on the line.
