Betws Park is set to be closed during the day for eight weeks across the summer months, due to safety reasons, as improvements are made.

Betws Community Council has announced that the closure will start on Monday, June 13, and end on Monday, August 8.

Across the eight weeks, the park will be closed between Monday and Friday, between 7.30am and 5pm, as improvements are made thanks to an £86,750 grant funded to boost biodiversity.

During the closure, the access to the park via Pentwyn Road will be unavailable during the whole of the working week.

It is hoped that the Local Places for Nature Fund grant from the National Lottery and the Welsh government will have many benefits to Betws Park in the future.

The funding will see an orchard and a woodland of native tree shrubs, with edibles in raised beds created, allowing foraging in the park and the creation of a new meadow area.

The work will also involve the removal and disposal of approximately 2,000m2 of tarmacadam and sub-base from the tennis court area.

Topsoil will also be brought in and spread and approximately 200m of gravel footpaths with edgings being built.

Mike Jones, vice chair of Betws Community Council, said: “We are really looking forward to opening the park again in August, and welcoming the biodiversity and wildlife which this funding will bring.

“The park will still be accessible on evenings and weekends, so it is more of a restriction to access rather than a closure of the park.

“In eight weeks, when it opens fully again in August, it will have much more disabled accessibility.

“We are really excited about the 150-200 species of trees which will be brought, along with other benefits for the area’s wildlife and for the community itself.

“The area will be a haven for wildlife, and we are really excited about what the park will boast in the future.”
