A massive fire-fighting operation was underway in Llandovery town centre yesterday evening (Sunday) after a major fire broke out in a property on Waterloo Street.

Calls were made at around 5.13pm that a house fire was underway however when fire crews arrived, they were met with what they described as ‘a fully developed blaze' in an upstairs bedroom.

They entered the property wearing breathing apparatus and quickly determined that there was nobody inside.

The blaze was quickly brought under control by four firefights which prevented a further spread through the roof space and into adjoining buildings in the terrace.

Thermal image cameras were used to see through the smoke and identify the seat of the blaze while two hose reel jets brought the fire under control. The gas and electric supplies were also isolated.

The firefighters were assisted at the scene by colleagues from Llanwrtyd Wells Fire brigade & co-responder, and Dyfed-Powys Police. Investigations are ongoing to establish how the fire broke out.

The house is situated just yards away from a general merchant's shop ironically called the Jubilee Stores after the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897.
