Young singers from schools throughout Neath Port Talbot are starring in a video of John Farnham’s ‘You’re the Voice’, in a bid to raise money for humanitarian aid for Ukraine.
Their cover version of the song which was made famous by John Farnham has been masterminded by Cerdd NPT Music Service.
“Just a few weeks after hearing that Ukraine had been invaded by Russia, I felt totally frustrated and helpless,” said Kirstie Roberts who is one of the singing teachers at Cerdd NPT. “I wanted to do something to help the families and the children who were struggling to survive but I had no idea where to start!”
Despite not having had an opportunity to sing together for two years as a result of the pandemic, Kirstie and her music colleagues gathered together 60 singers, six string players and a four-piece band to begin working on their cover version of 'You're The Voice'.
“We did it in just over three weeks,” continues Kirstie. “And once the parts were learnt, we came together with a cameraman and sound engineer to record the ccomplete work at Cwmtawe Community School.”
But recording in a studio, as any accomplished musician knows, is a complicated process.

“Basically, despite all the preparation work that had been done, the entire team had just one chance to get it right. And so our children sang their hearts out and our instrumentalists put everything possible into their performance, and it was all done for the children of Ukraine.”
Now Kirstie and her entire team of performers are hoping their video will get all the support it deserves.
“These children gave their time, passion and everything they had into putting all this together. Now all we ask is that people watch the amazing video and share it as widely as they can. We will all be so grateful….as will the children of Ukraine.”
