The coronavirus pandemic continues to ravage Welsh rugby at all levels, non more so than in the Indigo Welsh Premiership, writes Huw S Thomas.

Every Premiership club from Llandovery to Newport has cases of Covid in the squad, with the result that many have suspended training.

The WRU has allowed clubs to postpone league games in the hope that such games can be re-arranged once the pandemic relaxes its grip on the country.

The Drovers are yet to find out whom they will play in the quarter-final of the Indigo Premiership Cup as the play off game between RGC and Pontypridd has been postponed twice.

Whoever wins that game up in Colwyn Bay will be Llandovery’s opponents at Church Bank in the last eight of the Cup.

The quarter-final was scheduled for January 22, but there is little prospect of that taking place in the current climate.

Apart from the televised S4C games behind locked doors - Carmathen Quins - Llanelli and Llanelli - RGC v Llanelli - there has been little action other than at The Arms Park, where the Quins played and beat Cardiff 27-25 in a wonderfully exciting tussle behind closed doors.

Given the Welsh government restrictions on a crowd limit of 50, other clubs have been reluctant to open their doors, clubhouse and facilities to accommodate such a measly crowd in an exercise that would end seeing the club losing money.

Apart from the S4C televised games which bring some much needed cash into WRU coffers, it looks as if January will be a near barren month for players and supporters alike.

The Welsh language broadcaster had committed to showing a live match every Thursday for the rest of the season but this week’s Bridgend-Pontypridd game is off because of the large number of covid cases in the Pontypridd camp.

S4C are known to be looking into revising their list of televised games according to player availability but the only game that is set to go on at the time of writing is the Cardiff-Ebbw Vale game on January 27.

Any new Welsh government directions and restrictions might change the situation but

Llandovery’s games against Aberavon (Away Jan 15); RGC or Pontypridd (Home Jan 22); Newport (Away Jan 29) are all temporarily postponed.

So too the Quins whose games at home to Swansea (Jan 15) and RGC (Jan 29) are highly unlikely to take place.
