A STRATEGIC framework to ensure the ongoing support, protection, and engagement of the sporting heritage of Wales has opened for consultation.
The Framework has been funded by the Welsh Government and was developed by a Specialist Panel for the Sporting Heritage of Wales.
The panel launched in April 2020 and includes a range of sporting heritage specialists. The panel conducted targeted audience research and engagement activities across the sport, education, and cultural sector to help inform the contents and direction of the Framework.
Dr. Justine Reilly, founding director of Sporting Heritage CIC said: “Wales has such a rich and varied sporting heritage it’s so important we have a long-term approach to the sporting heritage of Wales which enables a resilient and sustainable programme of support protecting and sharing collections for future generations.
"Whether you are involved in grassroots sports, elite games, community groups, education, cultural, or the heritage sector– we need your input and feedback on the Framework to make sure we get this right as it’s such an exciting opportunity to develop sporting heritage in Wales.”
Deputy Minister for Arts and Sport, Dawn Bowden, said: “The underpinning aims, and objectives of the Framework will ensure a strategic approach to sporting heritage activity and development in Wales to enable thriving cultural activity and support cohesive communities.
“In the Framework, we’ve identified there are opportunities to uncover, share and celebrate previously hidden and ignored histories that are vital to the story of Welsh heritage, alongside sports heritage supporting wider aims around sports participation, education, and well-being.”
On July 20, the inaugural Sporting Heritage Wales Network began via zoom. The network will help support the delivery of the Framework, and draw in feedback on the Framework’s aims, objectives, and aspirations.
