The newly elected councillor said: "I am delighted that residents of Whitehaven Central have put their trust in me and I intend to be a strong voice for them on Copeland Council."

The votes cast were:

WRCS Dixon - Cons - 542 WR Dixon - Heritage Party: Free Speech and Liberty - 45 R Donnan – Ind - 90 J Ghayouba - Lab - 633 M Minogue - Lib Dem - 18

The turnout for the election was 29.9 per cent.

While elections were not taking place across the majority of Cumbria due to an ongoing consultation on the future of local government, voters in some wards took to the polls for by-elections.

The Whitehaven Central election was trigged after former councillor Sean Cullen was booted out for failing to attend a single meeting in six months last year.

The by-election was then postponed due to the coronavirus crisis.
