THIS wonderful photograph records life over a century ago.
It shows workmen busy laying cobbles at the top of of Deansgate in Bolton ni the early 1920s.
Some wheelbarrows, a small handcart and some shovels were all the equipment that was needed but the look at how many men were working on the job.
There’s so much to take from this picture from the ornate street lamps to the fact that all the men are wearing caps or hats. But perhaps the best thing is the wonderful open, curved stairs at the back of the double-decker bus you can see on the left.
Notice too the sign for Howley's opticians on the gable end of the building. Perhaps the letters needed to be so large to attract prospective customers to the establishment.
