Neath Port Talbot Council plans to spend £2.69 million on improving highways and other works throughout the county borough.
The local authority will spend a total of £2,688,000 on works including traffic schemes, drainage and carriageway resurfacing in 2021/22, according to a report by the council’s network and programme manager.
The report states: “The plan is formulated to try and ensure funding is invested where it is most needed and to best effect, thereby maximising community benefit.”
The funds will be provided via £1,935,000 from the council’s capital/revenue highway maintenance budget and £753,000 from the Welsh Government’s public highways refurbishment grant.
Earlier this month, the local authority approved council tax increase of 2.75%, which will cost residents in Band D properties an extra £44.43 per year (£1,660.02 in total).
The council plans to spend around £80m altogether on capital schemes in 2021-22, including building new schools, repairs at Margam Park, and revamping Neath town centre.
The council’s gross revenue income for 2021-22 is £459.9m and the net budget is £316.3m.
A breakdown of the funding for works to be completed on highways and neighbourhoods in Neath Port Talbot in 2021/22 is as follows:
Individual disabled parking / residents parking – £10,000
Minor works / traffic schemes (various) – £326,000

Landslips (emergency provision) – £20,000
Various bridges and structures – £300,000
Crash barrier remedial works – £20,000
Signalised crossings – £32,000
Contingency – £50,000
Monitoring fees – £27,000
Carriageway resurfacing (various) – £540,000
Footway/carriageway resurfacing (various) – £310,000
Carriageway resurfacing (various) – £753,000
A consultation has already taken place with with local councillors discussing the works.
The council’s cabinet voted in favour of the spending plans as outlined in its combined highways and neighbourhood works programme during a remote meeting on Friday, March 26.
All members will be informed of the details regarding the works due to be completed in their wards.
