Knitters in Penygroes have picked up their needles as a way of avoiding lockdown madness - and taken up a knitting challenge.

They have been busy knitting eight-inch squares for charity. These squares are then sewn together to make one huge rainbow as the emblem that shows defiance of Covid-19.

This will go on public display and then re-sewn into blanket sizes for refugees - very welcome in the cold winter nights for those who do not have a proper roof over their heads.

Mrs Elwyna Evans appeared on Radio Cymru to say that she thought it was most unfair that during lockdown hardware and garden tools could be sold but not wool. So the people could carry on with their gardening and DIY but knitters could not get enough wool for their projects.

Having something positive to do is an important mental health exercise in these lonely days, so as a result Elwyna received many donations of spare balls of wool. Anyone who would like to try out their knitting they should contact her for more information and to request some wool.

The scheme ends soon - so get knitting.

Contact Elwyna Evans, Janet Evans, Sheila John or Olive Davies, in Penygroes - just some of the women busy with this project, for details on where they should be sent.
