Youth charity The Prince's Trust has announced that it has helped one million young people since it was set up by HRH The Prince of Wales in 1976.

Llandeilo jewellery designer Mari Thomas - who was a recipient of the Trust's support more than 20 years ago - has recalled how it gave her the opportunity and confidence to start up her own business.

Prince Charles founded the charity in response to rioting and high unemployment among young people, and as we progress in a world of uncertainty through Covid-19, youth unemployment is now set to reach record highs this Autumn.

Mari took part in The Trust’s Enterprise programme in 1998 and is now an award-winning jewellery designer.

During her career, Mari has won numerous design awards, her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and has designed statement pieces for many well-known personalities, including Rhod Gilbert and Ioan Gruffudd.

From a small business in the shed at the bottom of her parents garden, Mari now owns the former Castle Hotel in Llandeilo which houses her gallery and workshops, employs a small team and supports Lian Cara, a local womenswear designer who recently received support from Prince’s Trust Cymru to set up her own business.

Mari said: “The Prince’s Trust was able to give me the opportunity and confidence to launch my own business. Without initial help from The Prince’s Trust I certainly would not have the successful business I have today.

"My business and career is my passion and it has created a life full of opportunities that I never dreamed possible. Young people need help from organisations like Prince’s Trust Cymru, now more than ever, to give them the support to guide them through the uncertain times and realise that they can still achieve their dreams.

"I am fortunate enough to be in a position where I can use my experience of running a business to guide and mentor young entrepreneurs and pass on the help that was given to me.”
