SHOPPERS have expressed concern that supermarkets and shops in Carmarthenshire are no longer adhering to Covid-19 measures.

In recent weeks stores have relaxed their one-way systems and strict customer limits, which were introduced at the beginning of lockdown.

After receiving a number of complaints, Eluned Morgan, MS for Mid and West Wales, has written to the council leader, Emlyn Dole, calling for action to help protect the county from the spread of coronavirus.

Eluned Morgan said she had concerns that supermarkets had "retreated too hastily" and are "potentially risking the protection of staff and customers".

In a letter to all council leaders across mid and west Wales she said: "I am receiving many complaints from constituents regarding the lack of social distancing and the removal of one-way systems in shops and supermarkets across Mid and West Wales.

"I appreciate that supermarkets and stores have had to adapt very quickly in recent months, however, I am concerned that many have retreated too hastily from their initial safeguards and are potentially risking the protection and wellbeing of their staff and customers.

"I would therefore be grateful if you could please arrange for your inspection officers to visit premises in your area to assess what action is being taken to ensure customers safety and to service improvement notices wherever necessary.

"Over the coming months we will need to continue to change and adapt our behaviour to cope with the on-going restrictions imposed by the virus."
