A YOUTH football team has raised more than £2,600 for Glangwili hospital.

After a summer trip to Alton Towers was cancelled due to Covid-19, Llandeilo town under 13s team set a fundraising challenge to walk 800 miles between them.

The distance set was the equivalent of Llandeilo to Alton Towers plus the travelling distance they should have taken to away games.

The club aimed to raise £800.

All 16 youngsters, three coaches and 10 parents managed, to run and walk 1,014 miles in seven days and have raised more than three times their initial target.

Coach Gareth Norton said: “The team turned a negative into a positive. Even though we were all doing the miles separately, it really united us.”

The team, who play in the Under-13s Carmarthenshire League chose Cilgerran children’s ward at Glangwili as the recipient for the fundraising.

They are pictured with their cheque for £2,634.17.
