A MAN is in hospital after being stabbed after a group of men allegedly jumped out of a car and attacked him.

An investigation is underway following the assault which happened shortly before 7.30pm yesterday (Monday) in the St Mark's Way area of South Shields.

It was reported that a group of men had approached the victim in a car before jumping out of the vehicle and assaulting him.

Emergency services attended and found the victim with non-life threatening injuries to his leg and neck consistent with a stabbing.

He was subsequently taken to hospital where he remains, a spokesperson for Northumbria Police confirmed.

An investigation has been launched into the incident and enquiries are ongoing to trace those involved.

At this stage, officers believe all parties were known to each other.

Detective Sergeant David Reeves, who is leading the investigation, said: “There is absolutely no place for incidents like this in our community and we will take robust action against anybody found to have been involved.

“This was clearly a serious assault that happened in a busy area of the town. The victim remains in hospital with multiple injuries and we will continue to offer him any support he needs.

“We are now determined to finding out the circumstances surrounding the incident and would ask anybody with information, or who was in the area at the time and saw the assault took place, to get in touch.

“Your information, no matter how insignificant you feel it may be, could prove crucial as we look to identify and trace those responsible and ensure they are ultimately brought to justice.”
