DAN yr Ogof showcaves has been given the green light to reopen this weekend.

The news comes after Welsh Government told Dan yr Ogof they had to remain closed, despite most indoor tourist attractions given the go-ahead to reopen.

But Health Minister Vaughan Gething at last confirmed the news at Tuesday's press conference that underground attractions could reopen.

He said: "I want to thank these attractions for working with us to ensure measures are in place to protect the public from the risk of coronavirus."

Dan yr Ogof chairman, Ashford Price said he was "delighted" to be reopening on Saturday.

"We are still mystified as to why all the other showcaves in Britain had been allowed to reopen with no problems," he said.

“Professor John Gunn, the showcaves’ scientific advisor, could not understand the reasoning behind the Welsh Government’s decision.”

He added: “We have literally had hundreds of emails wishing us well and we would like to thank all the readers of the South Wales Guardian for their support.

“Sadly the Welsh Government’s late decision has resulted in the loss of more than 40 jobs at the caves.

South Wales Guardian:

"We have only five main holiday weeks to take enough money to survive until next Easter, so it us still fifty-fifty on us getting through this.

"Any help from the other tourism operators would be greatly appreciated."

Mr Price said he was also happy to welcome back their Labrador Ffion to the Abercraf caves, who will return to assist security staff.

He added: "At Dan Yr Ogof showcaves we have always used trained Labradors to assist our security staff in making sure the caves are clear of visitors prior to locking the caves for the night.

"Our current Labrador Ffion had been doggy ‘furloughed’ for nearly four months so we wondered if she would remember her security duties. "However, after only a few minutes she was running around the caves looking very pleased with herself, and was obviously glad to be back as part of our team at Dan Yr Ogof."
