A CONSULTATION has been launched to find out residents’ views on the exciting Tywi Valley Path project.

The council wants to create a 16-mile path running alongside the scenic River Tywi between Carmarthen and Llandeilo for both leisure use and active travel.

The consultation exercise is running from July 9 to August 20 and is being carried out as part of a Welsh Transport Appraisal Guidance (WelTAG) study which is required on all transport schemes supported by Welsh Government.

The path is being constructed in phases and when complete, it is expected to boost the local economy by up to £2.4million a year through increased tourism and visitor spend; as well as encouraging active and sustainable travel between the two major county towns of Llandeilo and Carmarthen.

It is also part of the council’s long-term vision for Carmarthenshire to be recognised as the Cycling Hub of Wales.

Executive Board Member for the Environment Cllr Hazel Evans said: “It is important that we get residents views on the project, which will have huge benefits for local people.

“I know there is a lot of support for the scheme and people want to know when the path will be completed. There is a lot of work being carried out in the background in relation to planning for the eastern section as well as land acquisition and funding bids.”

The Tywi Valley Path is one of the council’s ambitious capital projects, and has previously received funding through the Welsh Government Rural Communities - Rural Development Programme 2014-2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development; and the Welsh Government’s Active Travel and Local Transport Funds.
