A CUMBRIAN mountain rescue team has worked alongside a talented Ulverston secondary school teacher to develop an isolation hood which will protect rescuers from potential contamination when out on the job.

Coniston Mountain Rescue Team worked with Megan Dixon, a design and technology teacher at Ulverston Victoria High School, to develop a lightweight isolation hood fitting inside the stone guard of the stretchers.

The hood comprises of two pieces; a semi-rigid, clear plastic shield fitting snugly inside the stone guard and a flexible clear curtain giving access to the casualty but also protecting team members from potential contamination of coronavirus.

The front curtain can be easily fitted whilst on site and cut to size, making it a task that is not taxing whilst dealing with a casualty.

The isolation hood uses simple velcro patches and reusable microfibre velcro strips are used to hold both pieces in place, using the stone guard cabling as anchor points.

Rob Ingham, Coniston team leader, said: “We are extremely grateful to Megan for the design input and speed of production that has been achieved, and which will provide an extra level of protection to our team in difficult circumstances, whilst on the hill."
