Ammanford's annual Giant Fairtrade Banana Split is set to take place on Friday, March 6.

The mega split will again stretch the full length of College Street's Arcade, as Fairtrade bananas donated by the town's Co-op store and award-winning Frank's ice-cream are placed in foil covered guttering loaned by LBS.

Volunteers from Ammanford Church, Gellimanwydd chapel and Ammanford Fair Trade Town Group have come together every year since 2008 to make the event the highlight of the town's Fairtrade Fortnight celebrations.

Fair Trade Town Group member, Phil Broadhurst, said : "The fun starts at 5.30pm with the building of the 100 feet long banana split. Eating begins at 6pm, and if previous years are anything to go by, it will not be around for long, so make sure you are on time, and if you can bring your own spoon, that will help us to cut down on our use of plastic spoons."

Ammanford became the First Fair Trade Town in Wales back in 2002 and has maintained its status ever since due to the commitment of shops and cafes in the town providing Fairtrade options, schools learning about and promoting Fairtrade, and politicians and community members supporting Fairtrade solutions to bring about a fairer deal for the people around the world who make and grow the products we buy.
