THIS year sees the National Trust celebrate its 125th anniversary and to mark the occasion the team at Dinefwr, in Llandeilo, will be sharing a wealth of objects recently discovered in the archives at Newton House.
It will be a rare opportunity to see the historic items, many of which haven't been seen since they were first placed into storage when the National Trust took over the property in the 1990s.
A spokesperson at Dinefwr said: "We’ve selected 125 items from this newly uncovered treasure trove in honour of the 125th anniversary of the National Trust to share with you.
"In March 2020 we’ll be launching a new space on the first floor of Newton House where you can come and look at objects from our collections on our brand new ‘Open Stores’ room. We’ll be showcasing some of the most intriguing pieces throughout the year, so keep an eye out for our changing features."
Items on display include a traditional and pristine Welsh Stove Pipe hat - thought to have been made between 1830 and 1860 - and now among only 300 known in Wales, plus a beautifully tailored dress made of Welsh wool in traditional black and red Carmarthenshire colours.
There are photographs, archaeological finds, books, fragments of 17th Century correspondence, decorative plaster work and wood carving and even some weird and wonderful hospital equipment – thought to be from World War II when the house served as a hospital for injured soldiers.
The list goes on, but the collection offers a magnificent insight into the marvellous house and the stories it has to tell.
The team at Dinefwr continue to research the stories behind the objects at Newton House and are seeking the public's help.
The spokesperson added: "Our records are often patchy and incomplete, sometimes we don’t know the origins or stories of the objects in our care.
"We see this as an opportunity to start a conversation with you, our visitors and supporters. Can you tell us more about the things in our collection?
"Please share with us whatever you may know about our 125 objects as well as stories about similar things that have been a part of your family’s life."
