Amman Valley sports groups are looking to the community to help them build a new all-weather playing surface.

With more youngsters taking up sport than ever before in the Amman Valley, members of Cwmamman United Juniors team are looking for support from the public to help develop a 4G all-weather Fifa and IRB playing surface on land behind Cwmamman’s Grenig Park stand.

Rob Griffiths, for Cwmamman Juniors explains: “It is clear we need something urgently, not only for Cwmamman United but to support the whole community, including local football, rugby, school and youth clubs.

“As with the standard Astro turf, the surface technology has moved on substantially. When it rains heavily the surface at the MUGA (Multi Use Gaming Arena) at Amman Park and Amman Leisure centre floods and when we get frost the MUGA, Leisure Centre and the Astro turf at the back of Ysgol y Bedol freeze creating a hazard for the players.

“This creates many postponements which will not happen with a 4G surface.”

Rob is calling on members of the public to back a ‘buy a brick for £1’ scheme that will help with the funding.

He added: “We live in a deprived area and we are doing what we can to keep the children safe, healthy and off the streets and this will make such a difference.”

“I was aware of a rugby club that successfully did a similar ‘buy a brick’ initiative to build a club house and changing rooms. So following discussions and a few calculations we estimated it would take 120,000 theoretical bricks at £1 a brick to complete the project.

“So, we thought why not launch a ‘buy a Brick for £1’ fundraiser and see where we get to.

“With the support of the community, local businesses, council and other organisations we believe we could turn this vision into a reality leading to improved wellbeing and health for many more adults and children.

“It has got off to a flying start and we are already overwhelmed by the generosity of the people in our community and surrounding areas.

“We will be looking to maintain the momentum with a number of supporting initiatives as we go along.”
