WORK has been carried out by the owners of a waste tip at Pwllfawatkin near Cwmgors in a bid to end the huge stink which has led to complaints from locals.

The issue has been growing concern to residents for years, who claim the smell has been getting worse in recent months.

Cwmgors resident Katherine Morris previously told the Guardian how the smell has been so bad it made her little boy feel sick. It promoted her to help kick start a campaign to get to the route of the problem. With the support of local neighbours, she set up a Facebook action group.

Group members have been claiming to smell the odour from the Abernant Road tip from as far as Brynaman, Ystalyfera, Pontardawe and Glanaman.

In a statement, Neath Port Talbot Council has said the owner-operators of the landfill tip, FCC Waste Services (UK) Ltd, has now finished capping the eastern flank of the tip and have been regularly monitoring the site since then to establish whether the capping has successfully addressed the odour problem.

Neath Port Talbot Council officers have said they will continue to monitor the situation and will work with Natural Resources Wales (NRW) to ensure the tip owners are operating in compliance with relevant legislation.

NRW’s South West Wales Industrial and Waste Regulation Team has been working on the problem with FCC with Neath Port Talbot Council closely monitoring.

A Neath Port Talbot Council spokesman said: “We have received a number of complaints regarding odour from the site which we are investigating with the landfill site’s management company in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act.

“Natural Resources Wales is responsible for regulating the site in terms of compliance with their Environmental Permit and as has notified the owners of the issue.”

Members of the public complaining about the odour should contact Natural Resources Wales on 0300 065 3000 or the Council on 01639 686868 or by e-mail on ehd@npt.gov.uk.
