THE candidates for December’s Parliamentary General Election have been announced, after the deadline for nominations passed on Thursday.

There will be four candidates standing for election in both the Carmarthen East and Dinefwr constituency, currently represented by Plaid Cymru’s Jonathan Edwards, and the Llanelli constituency, currently represented by Labour’s Nia Griffith.

Both seats will be contested by Plaid Cymru, Labour, the Conservative Party, and the Brexit Party.

In Carmarthen East and Dinefwr, Jonathan Edwards will be standing for re-election for Plaid Cymru, against Maria Carroll of Labour, Havard Hughes of the Conservative Party, and Peter Prosser of the Brexit Party.

In Llanelli Nia Griffith is standing again for Labour against Mari Arthur, of Plaid Cymru, Susan Boucher of the Brexit Party, and Tamara Louise Reay, of the Conservative Party.

The election will take place on Thursday, December 12.

As of last week, more than 56,000 people had registered to vote in Carmarthen East and Dinefwr, meanwhile more than 60,000 residents had registered to vote in Llanelli.

There will be 146 polling stations open between 7am and 10pm on December 12, manned by more than 300 volunteers.

Once voting closes, the votes from both constituencies will be counted at Llanelli Leisure Centre by a team of 130 volunteers.

Ballot papers from polling stations are expected to be receives shortly after the close of polls at 10pm.

It is estimated the results should be declared between 2am and 3am, though circumstances on the day could change that.

A spokesman from Carmarthenshire County Council said: “Voters are asked to bring their Polling Card with them to the polling station, although this is not essential provided the individual is listed on the Register of Electors.

“Voters in both constituencies will be asked to record a single vote for their preferred candidate.

“The colour of the ballot paper in both the Carmarthen East and Dinefwr, and Llanelli constituencies is white.”
