OVER £2,000 has been raised to support people with dementia illnesses and their carers in Carmarthenshire County Council’s Leader’s Golf Day.

Cllr Emlyn Dole set up the charity event last year as an annual fundraiser for good causes.

This year, the funds are going to Ty-Golau, a Llanelli-based charity that supports people with memory problems.

It offers a safe environment for people with Alzheimer's and dementia type illnesses to engage in mentally stimulating activities, and also offers support and respite to family members and carers.

Cllr Dole had recently met Jan Lewis, who runs Ty-Golau, and was inspired by her dedication and enthusiasm – so much so that he pledged to dedicate his annual golf day to her cause.

The event was held at the Ashburnham Golf Club, Pembrey, on Friday (September 13), where 11 teams played and helped raise money for the cause.

It was supported by a number of local businesses who donated raffle and auction prizes.

They included, amongst others, Parc Y Scarlets, St. Brides Spa Hotel, Penderyn, Stradey Park Hotel, National Botanic Garden of Wales, The Ashburnham Golf course, Castell Howell, LSN Diffusion, Travis Perkins, Celtic Manor and TAD Ltd.

“I am so pleased that once again it was a successful event,” said Cllr Dole.

“We had fantastic support for the event, not only from the teams that entered and dug deep in their pockets for the cause, but to all the businesses that so generously donated prizes for the raffle and auction.

“This year we raised over £2,000 for Ty-Golau – a fantastic cause that supports the health and wellbeing of people with memory problems, Alzheimer's and dementia type illnesses, their carers and professionals.”

Last year, the Leader’s Golf Day raised funds for the Peony Suite at Prince Philip Hospital’s Breast Care Unit, a charity he chose because of the care and support they gave to his wife when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
