Around 80 people turned out to take on Ammanford’s wackiest challenge on Saturday, July 6.
The annual charity wheelbarrow race, otherwise known as Barrow Racers, is a six-mile real life wacky racers bar crawl event where teams of pairs dress up in their best fancy-dress costumes and take it in turns to push each other in a wheelbarrow for the duration of the competition.
The route started at 12pm from Amman United RFC in Glanaman and stretched down to Ammanford and then eventually back to the Amman United ground.
£750 was raised for LATCH throughout the course of the day.
The first to return and winners were the American Football Players.
Organisers Nick Francis said: “The event went off without a hitch as the masses turned up with their high spirits.
“Considering we were competing with two weddings, and three large scale events around Ammanford, Swansea, and Llandeilo, we had an incredible turnout.
“Around 80 people came in the end, mostly in pairs and a few in larger groups.
“The winner of the most original idea goes to the KFC guys. That was hilarious.
“Best Barrows were the pirate ship, the KFC guys and of course unbiasedly my Delorean (Back to the Future).
“Absolutely Fabulous seemed to be the most popular costume with three sets of girls turning up in variations of the characters.”
Stand out effort for fundraising during the day goes to Melissa Roberts, of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles group, for single-handedly filling one of the collection tubs resulting in her moving on to a second.
Nick added: “No one else came close to that so we'd like to recognise her as our VIP fundraiser of the 2019 Barrow Racers event.
“We had almost exactly 50/50 boys to girls for the first time ever which is amazing.
“This event used to be all-male in its early days, and over the years the girls have started to take part and give the boys a run for their money.
“I think next year the girls could blitz us in numbers.”
Organisers would like to thank Coleg Sir Gar for providing a speaker to play music all day.
“A big thank you also goes to Dan Phillips for taking everyone's photos and assisting the event at the start,” added Nick.
“A special thank you to everyone who turned up for making it a special day and helping us raise money for the amazing charity LATCH.”
