The oldest resident of a Gwendraeth Valley residential home has celebrated her 105th birthday.

Mrs Annie Davies was born in Port Talbot in 1914, one of a family of seven.

The mother-of-two has five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Tragically, one of Annie’s grandsons died in his thirties, a source of great sorrow to her.

Mrs Davies’ son lives in West Wales and she has enjoyed a close involvement with his children and grandchildren over the years, and her daughter and family live in Switzerland.

Mrs Davies have made many trips to visit them, even late into her nineties.

Always very active, busy and hardworking, nothing has ever been too much trouble for her.

Annie’s niece Gill Figg told The Guardian: “She loves children and has always provided unstinting hospitality to her wider family of nieces and nephews who enjoyed many holidays with Aunty Annie.

"Her kindness to them, not to mention her culinary expertise, greatly appreciated."

During the Second World War, Mrs Davies worked in the munitions factory in Bridgend, an often dangerous occupation.

Later, she worked as a housekeeper and receptionist for a doctor in Carmarthen, and it was here that she met her husband, who lived in nearby Abergwili, where they eventually settled after the war and had their family.

Mrs Davies was a valued and respected member of the village community.

As well as devoting herself to caring for her family, she was always helping neighbours and elderly relatives when they were ill or in need.

She was also in the WRVS, working in Glangwili Hospital for many years and was President of the village Evergreen Club well into her nineties.

Widowed from the age of 57, she led an independent life right up to and past her hundredth year, maintaining her pride in keeping her house spick and span, cleaning her own windows, doing her own decorating, cooking her own meals and baking, in spite of being partially sighted.

More recently, after several falls and a stay in hospital, it became no longer possible for her to manage on her own, and she has retired to Gwernllwyn Care Home inCross Hands where her quiet stoicism and courage is clearly valued by staff and residents alike.

Annie celebrated her birthday with family members and staff at the care home on June 19.
