Graffiti has become a "major problem" in Ammanford according to members of Ammanford Town Council.

During a full council meeting held on June 18, councillors shared their concerns with the amount of graffiti appearing across the town, in particular inside public toilets.

The toilets situated at Co-op car park were repainted recently and have been targeted by vandals once again.

A spokesperson for Ammanford Town Council said: “The toilets at Co-op car park have been painted recently, and graffiti has reappeared on the walls inside the toilets.

“The same group appear to be targeting Ammanford Park toilets also.

“It has taken four coats of paint to cover the markings, which are a mixture of religious passages and highly offensive language.

“Anti-graffiti paint has been applied previously but has not worked.

“It is costing a lot of money repainting the toilets all the time.

“We are monitoring the issue but if it doesn’t improve we may have no choice but to start charging for the use of the toilets.

"Police have been made aware of the issue."

One councillor suggested that the inside of the toilets was painted colourfully, but the clerk reminded councillors that they are a Dementia Friendly organisation and the walls had to remain the current colour.

A spokesperson for Dyfed-Powys Police said: “Graffiti is an offence of criminal damage. If prosecuted, offenders can face a fine or even imprisonment.

“Local authorities can issue fixed penalty notices for offences of graffiti and are responsible for cleaning it up from public buildings and fixtures.

“Graffiti should initially be reported to the local authority, who will act either by issuing a fixed penalty notice to the person responsible or prosecuting them in court.”
