Plaid Cymru MP Jonathan Edwards has welcomed the European election results which indicate a decisive victory for his party in the constituency.

Sampling by party officials at the count in Llanelli indicate a victory for Plaid Cymru in the constituency with more than 40 per cent of the vote.

Across the county of Carmarthenshire (which contains in addition to Carmarthen East and Dinefwr, the Llanelli and Carmarthen West seats) the combined vote for the remain parties (Plaid Cymru, Greens, Liberal Democrats and Change UK) was higher than that of the parties supporting leave (Brexit Party, UKIP and Conservatives).

Mr Edwards said: "Considering the political circumstances of this election, Plaid Cymru has delivered an incredible result in the Carmarthen East and Dinefwr constituency.

Whilst the Labour and Conservative party vote collapsed to the Brexit Party we managed to win the constituency comfortably.

I'd like to thank Plaid Cymru activists for all their hard work and to voters in the constituency for supporting us.

The results clearly show Carmarthenshire is now a Remain county.

With Westminster in meltdown, now more than ever we need a strong Plaid Cymru to protect the interests of Wales."
