Residents in Neath Port Talbot are being asked to fill out a questionnaire to help the local authority and various partner organisations understand the impact Brexit might have on people and their communities.

It asks a number of questions including whether people feel confident or nervous about their future with the UK set to leave the EU, whether residents feel that they belong to their community, and if people have ever been the victim of a hate crime.

Further questions involve the topic of loneliness, asking residents to answer if they often feel lonely, and if their social media accounts are positive.

It also asks whether people, having listened to all the discussions around Brexit, would now choose to withdraw from the EU or remain, with another question on where people get most of their news about leaving the EU.

The survey asks residents about their own friendships with people, whether they include friends from people of other backgrounds, and how easy or difficult they find it when engaging with people from other backgrounds.

It also asks people whether they have ever felt unwelcome by people from their local community or elsewhere in Neath Port Talbot and whether they think people who have migrated to Wales from other parts of the world have made a positive contribution to the Welsh economy.

Additionally residents are being asked what they would find useful to help them understand the impact of leaving the EU and which concerns worry them most from a list including finding/keeping employment, having enough money for rent/mortgage, health, losing Welsh language and heritage, and suffering discrimination.

Other questions involve whether they participate in any community, sport or physical activity, and whether they feel that with the UK set to leave the EU, it may cause problems or tensions in their community.

The questionnaire which asks people for their postcode has been put together by the Safer Neath Port Talbot Partnership, a mix of public, private and voluntary sector organisations who aim to reduce crime and disorder and the fear of crime in the county.

In addition to Neath Port Talbot Council, the partnership involves South Wales Police, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, the local health board and the South Wales Probation Trust.

The partnership says the questionnaire, called a Community Cohesion Survey, is “completely anonymous” and takes about seven minutes to complete.
