A charity event is making a welcome return to town this summer.

The annual charity wheelbarrow race, otherwise known as Barrow Races, is a six-mile real life wacky racers bar crawl event where teams of pairs dress up in their best fancy-dress costumes and take it in turns to push each other in a wheelbarrow for the duration of the competition.

The route begins at Amman United RFC in Glanaman and stretches down to Ammanford and then eventually return back to the Amman United ground.

The teams involved all fundraise collectively on the way down and then on the way back the real race begins.

Although it is not all as it seems as the racers must stop off at a total of 12 bars on the way down and back where they must drink a pint in order to progress.

Nick Francis, who has been organising the event for the past decade along with Christian Madge, said: "The event didn’t take place last year as I was away travelling but we are back, and we are ready.

“This year will be our 12th year of Barrow Racers and as with every year around this time, we are really excited to see how this one comes together.

“Rain or shine, our racers turn up in their masses every year which is a testament to how fun an event it is for all the local community.

“It's on a Saturday, it's for a fantastic cause and people get to enjoy having a few drinks shortly before then burning them off as they're pushing each other between bars. How can you possibly say no to that?

“If you haven't done it before but want to give it a go, do it.

“Once you start you will never stop, we are sure of it. It is addictive.

“If you need a partner, we can help you there to by heading to our Facebook or Twitter and get in touch with us.

“Every year we put people struggling for partners together and by the end of the day, they're best mates.”

Entry for the race is £5 each and all the money gets added to the days collections and will be donated to LATCH, a Welsh Children's Cancer Charity and to Kevin Simpson’s Vietnam trek in aid of Marie Curie.

Nick added: “There is no need to register.

“You are more than welcome to turn up on the day.”

The event takes place on Saturday, July 6 at the Amman United RFC at 12 noon.
