An Ammanford family are hoping to raise £10,000 to fund a sensory room to help with their 10-month-old son's development and comfort.

Zion Griffiths was diagnosed with Microlissencephaly at birth.

His head was small when he was born on May 6 2018 which led to an MRI scan the day after which showed his brain hadn’t developed.

Microlissencephaly comes with a lot of complications including seizures and respiratory problems with a life expectancy from 2 years to up to 10.

Zion is also developmentally delayed and is unable to hold his head up, sit unaided, stand on his legs or sit in a hair chair.

He is fed through a NG tube as his swallowing is becoming unsafe.

As part of his development, Zion would benefit from sensory toys and his family are now appealing for help to ensure that their son has the best quality of life.

Zion’s mum Rukaya said: “This has been a really hard journey for myself and my husband, Richard.

“The hospital stays, the never-ending appointments, the decision making that are quite often difficult, the meetings with palliative care. But ultimately the fear that Zion’s life is going to be cut short.

“He's an incredible little boy who has been an absolute warrior from the day he was born.

“He has a strength like no other. Every hard thing thrown at him, he catches it and flings it and gets back up to fight again.

“Watching Zion go through so much pain is the hardest thing we have ever had to do. Especially when we can't do anything to stop it.

“But what we can do, is give him the best life possible for however long he is here with us.

“We are asking, actually pleading with you, that if you can, however small, however big, could you possibly donate something which would go towards making sure Zion has the best life he can.

“It would mean so so much to us as a family, but most of all, to Zion.”

Pupils at Ysgol Bro Banw Infants joined in with the fundraising activities last week by wearing blue to school.

Rukaya added: “Zion’s brother Dexter attends the school and they were happy to help raise awareness.

“A group of us are climbing Pen Y Fan on March 23 and we are planning for other fundraising events in the near future.”
