This year Llandeilo launches its Festival of Two Saints, celebrating the lives of our patron saint, David, and his thought-to-be cousin, Teilo.

St Teilo’s day is usually celebrated on February 9 but Llandeilo historically has stood apart and celebrated it on the Sunday nearest February 20.

This was probably the result of the move, in 1752, from the Julian Calendar to the European Gregorian Calendar.

The change of calendar took the UK 200 years to agree, the rest of Europe more than 300 years, and Turkey only finally agreed in 1927.

St. Teilo’s Day falls this year at the beginning of St David’s week therefore Llandeilo Fawr Town Council has decided to celebrate them together in a Festival of Two Saints.

A varied programme has been complied and the festival starts with a musical treat featuring Cantorion Llandeilo Singers on Saturday, February 23 who will perform Faure’s Requiem, the Durufle Requiem and Faure’s Cantique de Jean Racine at St Teilo’s Church at 7pm. Tickets are £12 at the door.

The Mayor’s Civic Service at St Teilo’s Church takes place on St Teilo’s Day on Sunday, February 24 at 2.30pm and on the following evening the chaired and crowned National Eisteddfod bard, Tudur Dylan Jones will deliver the Annual St. David’s Lecture at Dylan Horeb at 7.30pm; simultaneous translation facilities will be provided.

Sports buffs are also catered for with a Sports Quiz at Llandeilo Rugby Club on February 27 at 7.30pm. £1 entry fee per contestant.

On the evening of Friday, March 1, there will be a special St David’s Day service at St Teilo’s Church at 6pm followed by a night of fun in the Civic Hall at 7.30pm when Eifion Price and Friends will play at a Twmpath which will follow a meal of cawl and Welsh cakes. Tickets including food cost £12.

The week’s festivities come to a close on Saturday, March 2 when the town band and a folk-dance group will entertain shoppers and children can take part in a treasure hunt around the town from 10am until 1pm. Admission is free.

Prices have been kept to a minimum and, with the exception of the concert, school children will be admitted to all events free of charge.
