An Ammanford cake maker has walked away with two gold awards at a national competition.

Cake DeeVine owner DeeDee Robinson, from Blaenau, entered two sweet treats into the Welsh National Cake Show on February 9.

The entries, a two-tier greetings card themed cake and six fry-up inspired cupcakes, both won gold at the cake show held at Cardiff’s County Hall.

DeeDee told The Guardian: “I am so happy to have won gold for both my entries.

“To make it even better my cupcakes came Best in Section. I cried because I was so happy.”

“I was out of my comfort zone for both categories.

“The two-tier cake needed to be inspired by a greetings card and I ended up with the highest mark in my category with 96 out of 100.”

DeeDee created fry-up themed cupcakes for her second entry which consisted of a frying pan containing different ingredients found on a cooked breakfast including egg, bacon and beans on each cake.

The handle of one of the frying pans fell off on the day of the competition and DeeDee nearly withdrew her entry.

“I have always said I’d never do cupcakes but the main reason I entered cupcakes was due to them being tasted,” added DeeDee.

“We could choose any flavour, so I went with vanilla.

“I figured if I can get a decent mark on a boring flavour, that’s probably the best recognition I could get.

“Despite one of the handles falling off one of the frying pans, I got Best in Section in the category which is amazing.”

After seeing their mum get creative in the kitchen, DeeDee’s children Leigh and Kelsie entered the junior section of the competition.

Ysgol Saron pupil Leigh, 11, scooped silver and 10-year-old Kelsie walked away with the bronze award for their celebration-themed cakes.

“Both of them were delighted with their recognition at the cake show,” said DeeDee.

“It was their first show and I encouraged them to give it a go.

“They were watching me decorate my entry and I offered them advice.

“They are now both keen to enter Cake International in Birmingham this year.”
