A road improvement scheme to ease traffic congestion at the Wind Street and Tirydail Lane junction in Ammanford is nearing completion, according to Carmarthenshire County Council.

The £2.1million scheme has been underway over the last 12 months, and is set to be finished at the beginning of March.

Contractors Alun Griffiths Ltd were appointed by Carmarthenshire County Council to construct a new roundabout to replace signals at the Wind Street and Tir -Y- Dail Lane junction, and the widening of William Walker Way from the new roundabout to the Carregamman Lane car park roundabout.

Five terraced properties and one office block building have been demolished as part of the scheme, which is scheduled for completion by March 8.

From tonight - Monday February 18 - work will be undertaken overnight for approximately five nights, weather depending, as teams work towards completion.

The final phase of works will involve the closure of the A474 and TiryDail Lane from 7pm until 7am. The lane closures will alternate as the works progress.

A diversion will direct traffic on to Wind Street managed by traffic lights and a convoy system, allowing access for businesses and residents.

Jane Howells, Public Liaison Officer for Alun Griffiths Ltd, said: “We are extremely grateful for the patience and understanding that residents and businesses have shown us.

"We aim to minimise disruption and reduce any inconvenience where possible.”

Carmarthenshire County Council’s Executive Board Member for the Environment Cllr Hazel Evans said: “We have invested significantly in this scheme to improve traffic flow in Ammanford, which had become a particular issue at this location, especially at peak times.

“This has been a major construction project, and we realise the impact that this has had on commuters over the last year. We appreciate people’s patience and understanding, and look forward to seeing the completion of the works in the next few weeks.”

The council received grants from the Welsh Government’s Local Transport Fund for each phase of the scheme.
