An award-winning actress from Ammanford has swapped ballet lessons at the Pensioners Hall for the West End stage.

Sara Lloyd-Gregory made her debut in ‘Home I’m Darling’ at The Duke of York theatre last month.

The 32-year-old plays Alex in the play, which is described as a dark comedy with 50’s music, dancing, cake and cocktails.

Sara told The Guardian: “It feels surreal to be making my West End debut.

“I feel proud that sticking to my dream job has brought a lot of special moments with it, and this is definitely one of them.”

“Fellow Welsh actor Richard Harrington is also in the play so it’s lovely to be acting on stage together after working with him on TV projects.”

Winning a BAFTA Cymru in 2015 for her role in S4C series ‘Alys’, opening ‘Home I’m Darling’ at the National Theatre and now performing on a West End stage are dreams that Sara has been able to tick off her “actor’s bucket list’

“I wanted to be a dancer from a young age,” Sara added.

“I started ballet at The Pensioner’s Hall in Ammanford at the age of three and continued into my teens up at Gwaun Cae Gurwen Community Hall.

“I also did line, tap, contemporary and jazz dancing. Sadly, I was never tall enough to be a ballet dancer.

“I started at The Mark Jermin Stage School before joining BTEC performing arts in Gorseinon College. That’s when I slowly moved to the acting side.”

Sara grew up around big audiences being the daughter of Adrian, one half the Gregory Brothers - the other brother being Sara’s uncle Paul.

Despite now living in Cardiff, Sara has never forgotten her roots.

“I do come home to Ammanford as often as I can, I still call it home even though I live in Cardiff,” she said.

“My parents live here so I come home for a rest. Well, I have a rest, they don’t.”

“And also, not forgetting, Mamgu Salem’s ‘Cinio dydd Sul’. Hands down the best Sunday lunch, ever. Worth coming home for.”

‘Home, I’m Darling’ is at The Duke of York’s Theatre until April 13 followed by a three-week tour visiting Bath, Manchester and Theatr Clwyd.

Sara is also working on ‘The Tourist Trap’ mockumentary for BBC One Wales.
