A GENEROUS secret Santa has anonymously donated around £300 worth of food to Ammanford Foodbank.

Volunteers couldn’t believe it when 34 crates of goods were delivered to the foodbank, based at Ammanford Church in Wind street, on December 7.

Mydrim Davies, Foodbank manager, told The Guardian that it was the biggest single donation they had received since opening in 2013.

He said: “I had a phone call from one of the managers at Tesco and they told me that they had received an online order for the Foodbank.

“When the lorry turned up they opened the side of the van and it was full of crates so I asked ‘how many are ours?’ and the driver said ‘all of them’.”

It was the person who placed the order’s wish to remain anonymous but they managed to access the foodbank’s list of items it needed on its Facebook page in order to buy those specific items.

“It’s truly overwhelming,” Mr Davies added.

“They accessed our list of things we needed on Facebook so it was all of the things we needed such as tinned meat, tinned fruit, biscuits, custard, pasta, rice and a variety of things.

“I am humbled by people’s generosity in general but this took it to a different level.

“It was like a breath of fresh air for us and a huge boost for everyone.”

The foodbank has more than 50 volunteers, has fed around 8,000 people, and has had 80 tonnes of food donated since it opened almost five and a half years ago.

Mr Davies added: “Every year is busier than the last and we’ve fed close to 2,000 people this year.

“Christmas is the busiest month of the year for us as if you’re ever going to feel short it will be this time of year, plus we’ve got the roll-out of Universal Credit in Ammanford.”

“We are a Trussell Trust foodbank and we’ve got a collection point in Tesco in Ammanford and everything that goes in there, Tesco tops it up by 20 per cent which is a financial lifeline for us.”

The foodbank also received 801.20 kg of food from Cross Hands-based family business Shufflebottom LTD on Friday, December 14.
