Wales' leading first aid charity is celebrating 100 years in Ammanford this year.

Every year, more than 400,000 people learn how to save a life through St John’s Cymru training programmes including hundreds of thousands of young people.

Volunteers provide first aid in their communities, keeping people safe at events, and working alongside the NHS in response to 999 calls.

The charity also campaign to raise awareness of first aid and directly educate the public.

A spokesperson for the charity said: “First aid is such a simple skill, but it has an incredible impact.

“We want everyone to learn it, so that they can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.”

Despite being in the town since 1918, the charity’s presence in Ammanford continues to grow with a new intake of Cadets, which was formed last year with just one member.

DCO Stephen Cook said: “We started with one cadet, Katie Cook, in March 2017 and by the end of 2017 we got up to 10 cadets.

“Now we have 18 cadets aged between 10 and 18.

“At Cadets it's all about fun, community and developing your skills where you can learn first aid, earn your Grand Prior Award and volunteer within your community.

“It is a great way for teens and young people to take part in volunteer work and learn valuable life skills.”

As a Cadet, you can learn first aid skills, volunteer within your community by providing first aid cover at public events, learn leadership and public speaking skills by teaching first aid to other young people, spend time on weekend residential camps packed with activities and have the opportunity to compete in international first aid competitions.

3A's Leisure are proud sponsors of the cadets and have donated uniform, hi-vis vests, Christmas gifts, raffle prizes, stationary to help the cadets earn their bronze, silver, gold and Duke of Edinburgh awards.

The first presentation evening was held recently where members each received a certificate for food and hygiene, drill, deaf and blind, crime prevention, craft, membership award and fundraising.

The group also took part in the town’s annual Remembrance Parade for the first time this year.

If you are interested in joining the Cadets, the group will next meet at St John’s Hall, Margaret Street, Ammanford on Wednesday, January 9 2019 at 6pm.
