A PACKED congregation at Tabernacle Chapel, Haverfordwest, thrilled to the powerful singing of choristers of 10 local choirs at a concert which was part of the town's Armistice Centenary commemoration on Sunday November 11.

So great was the demand for tickets to the concert that a further 70 people had the concert relayed to them on a screen in the adjacent schoolroom as over spill from the chapel.

Sharing the conducting duties were two respected musical directors, Pat Swales-Barker and Shirley Williams, who had combined to arrange and rehearse singers from Cantorion Ty Ddewi, Cantabile, Friends in Harmony, Haverfordwest Ladies and Male Voice choirs, Llangwm Village Voice, Landsker Singers, Neyland Ladies, Roch and Tempus, together with other local singers.

The officiating clergy were Revd Martin Spain, Revd Steve Skibniewski-Woods, Revd Geoffrey Eynon, Revd Jonathan Kirk and Fr Graham Lloyd. Accompaniment was provided by Anne Evans and Seimon Morris and a brass section comprised Kiran Deering, Carys Carys George, Eirian Rutherford and Joe Richards, who also played the Last Post and Reveille.

Popular opera singer Georgina Stalbow sang three beautiful solos by Ivor Novello, Holst and Mai West and tenor Steven Richards-Downes also sang a solo part. Mabyn Charlton and Jane James read poems in English and Welsh.

It was a rare occasion these days to hear a large choir test the special acoustical qualities of a chapel and a fitting tribute to the sacrifice of the WW1 heroes.
