An Ammanford woman who lost her mum earlier this year has followed in her footsteps by hosting a series of fundraising events in aid of a vital charity.

Lisa Baston passed away in January this year following a brave battle with ovarian cancer.

Her daughter Lucie Bastin decided that she wanted to do something to honour her mum and has been hosting fundraisers throughout the year.

“Over the last few months I have hosted a 50’s tea party, raffles and cake sales to raise enough money to be able to compete in the London Marathon,” said Lucie.

“My mum enjoyed running and we competed in a few half marathons together so I really wanted to take on a marathon.”

Lucie emailed Ovarian Cancer Action and told the charity about her wishes to run the marathon for her mum and she secured a place and had a target of £3,000 to raise for the charity.

Ovarian Cancer Action is a charity that funds scientific research at the Ovarian Cancer Action Research Centre in the UK and promotes public awareness of ovarian cancer.

An evening at the races themed fundraiser was held at Saron Hall earlier this month and raised £1,768 towards the charity.

“My mum was a keen equestrian and loved a party so the night at the races seemed perfect,” said Lucie, store manager at Tesco Ystradgynlais.

“Everyone was dressed up and really made an effort which was amazing.

“We had virtual races on the screens and it went really well.

“We received a lot of support from local businesses too.”

“I really want to thank everyone who helped me organise it, especially my friends and my mums’ best friend, Joy Mccarley, without them the night wouldn’t have happened.

“I’d also like to thank everyone who has donated.

“My mum held a fundraiser for the same charity last year so I know she would be very proud.

“I have reached my target and now the tough training will begin for the marathon in April.”

A spokesperson for Ovarian Cancer Action said: “We are committed to preventing hereditary ovarian cancer and continue to campaign to ensure that all women at high risk have access to genetic testing and information about how they can reduce their risk. Preventative options such as risk-reducing surgery and increased surveillance could prevent a potential 1,000 cases per year.”

Lucie’s next fundraiser is a cupcake sale will be held at Tesco Ystradgynlais this Friday, November 16.
