Sending letters to his ex in a bid to be reunited with possessions led to a prison sentence for a Pembroke Dock man.

Daniel Benedict Tobin, of Laws Street, pleaded guilty to two charges of harassment by breaching a restraining order when he appeared before Haverfordwest magistrates from custody on Monday, October 15.

The court heard that Tobin, 49, was subject to a restraining order prohibiting him from contacting his former long-term partner, but posed her letters on September 15 and October 8.

Sian Vaughan, prosecuting, said the complainant recognised Tobin’s handwriting when the first letter arrived through her door, and asked her son to read it.

Miss Vaughan added that the content did not appear to be distressing, but Tobin wrote that he could go to prison if she told the police about the letters, and the woman felt that he was trying to edge his way back into her life.

The police were contacted after the second letter arrived.

Mike Kelleher, defending, said the couple had been together for 12 to 13 years, and he had lived at the property they shared for a total of 30 years, before moving out after the spilt.

“A substantial amount of his items remained there.”

Mr Kelleher added that when carpenter Tobin settled into his current address he became aware of possessions which he had left in the former marital home.

“He wanted his possessions back and sent two letters trying to achieve that. They were not threatening letters, they were not rude, they were polite.”

Magistrates sentenced Tobin to 16 weeks in prison for each offence, to run concurrently.

He was ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £115 surcharge.
